Meet Singer-songwriter Tiana Xiao: new single “Imagine” brings fresh breeze amid chaotic times

Singer-songwriter Tiana Xiao is releasing her new single, “Imagine.” “Imagine” is a song written and co-produced by Tiana. Recorded in isolation, the song will be the first single that Tiana releases independently after parting with her label a few years ago. The song is set to be released on August 18th and will stream and be available for download on all digital music platforms like Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, Deezer, Amazon Music, and more.

“Imagine” is the first EDM song Tiana wrote and performed. Fans of The Chainsmokers or Alan Walker would certainly find the song intriguing. Co-produced by platinum producer Dibs, who worked on Melanie Martinez’ “Soap,” as well as on EDM projects like Lost Boy & Signal Goes Silent’s “Waste Your Time,” “Imagine” is refreshing: the longer structure of the lyrics is rather reminiscent of songs from the late 2000s or early 2010s and allows for more iambic pentameter-esque lines that intertwine strikingly well with the warm sounds of 2019 and 2020 future bass. “Can you imagine what it would be like,” Tiana sings, “Don’t ever let them tear your dream apart.” Listeners who pay attention to lyrics would feel drawn to the song — which is likely why, besides social distancing, Tiana chose to release a lyric video as the official music video for this song. It is easy for a song to sound cheesy if the lyrics are too positive sometimes, but somehow, with this song, it works well.

Some of us may remember Tiana as a highly acclaimed J-pop and R&B Asian American singer-songwriter from a few years back. Raised in Los Angeles, California, Tiana discovered her love for music at a young age. When she was 15, Tiana flew to Tokyo to audition with Yoshiaki Sanada, who headed Toshiba EMI’s Virgin Records and was the executive producer for J-pop Queen Utada Hikaru. Tiana signed with Teichiku Entertainment and worked with prominent producers such as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who produced Janet Jackson and Mary J. Blige, and wrote and produced a multitude of number one hits for musicians including George Michael, Mariah Carey, and Usher. After releasing a number of J-pop and R&B records, including a full-length album, Tiana took a hiatus from singing to finish college back in the U.S. “I took some time to pursue other passions of mine,” the singer-songwriter says, “such as working in finance, as well as to focus on other equally important things, like my family. But music will always be a huge part of my life… it really helps me through tough times.”

“Imagine” will be part of a new mini-album that Tiana is working on. “This is really exciting,” she says, “because it’s the first time I’ll be releasing songs that I co-produced. And it’s the first time I’ll be the executive producer overlooking the entire project, with full control over my art.”
