The artists in the Top Ten hail mainly from mainland Europe, with iconic French, Dutch, Austrian, Russian and Italian painters joined by John William Waterhouse from Britain, and Harry Roseland from the United States. The most recent painting (Composition VII by Kandinsky) was created in 1913, and the oldest (The Last Supper) dates back to 1498. 

Discarded Roses by impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir was the most popular painting of 2021, and is an exceptional example of the artist’s excellence in still life. Famously quoted as saying he found painting flowers to be a form of relaxation, this particular subject allowed Renoir to experiment with color, and express a love of nature that continues to be shared today. 

The Top 10 also includes the only seascape ever painted by Rembrandt, the final painting of Klimt’s Gold Period, and Vincent Van Gogh is the only artist with two pieces on the top 10, one of which he painted while a patient in a mental asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence (Starry Night).
