Dr. Jyothi Patri, MD, MHA, FAAFP, a family physician, is assisting the community in her role as an educator in Central Valley, California.

Dr. Jyothi Ranga Patri, MD, MHA, FAAFP, a leading primary care physician specializing in family medicine, has become a figure of adoration for her colleagues and community members in the Central Valley in California. She fills the important role of an educator with ease, guiding and advising future family medicine doctors.

Often, it is more about the journey than the destination; for Dr. Patri, it is both. Dr. Patri currently serves as the Program Director at Adventist Health Hanford Family Medicine Residency Program, at Hanford, California, an institution dedicated to serving the people of King’s County. Dr. Patri fills the important role by working tirelessly to ensure the health care needs of the people of Central Valley are adequately met.

Her passion for teaching and bringing out the best potential extends to her work with her residents and medical students. “Noticing their potential and being a part of their growth and throughout this process, you’re honored in all the work they do. We, as physicians have a specific role to play in teaching – which is to elevate the experience for the residents to be ready to practice medicine. These promising future doctors will help fill the critical shortage of primary care physicians in the community”.

Throughout U.S. history, the demand for family physicians has always greatly surpassed the available supply. The San Joaquin Valley has the lowest supply of physicians in all of California by a dramatic amount. With a ratio of 39 doctors per 100,000 residents, the San Joaquin Valley’s supply is 22 percent lower than the already low state average. Experts note underserved regions typically need 60 to 80 doctors per 100,000 people, meaning the Valley significantly lags the national average.

Dr. Patri previously worked at premier institutions such as the University of California San Francisco at Fresno, the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Fayette Physician Network (Uniontown, PA). Throughout her professional career, she has made efforts to serve the most underserved populations in the United States

Dr. Patri continues to be involved with the community through advocacy of health-related issues, physician leadership, and community service. She is an active member of California Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP), the current president of the CAFP Fresno-Kings-Madera chapter and served as house of delegate two years in a row for CAFP’s All-Member Advocacy Meeting (AMAM) for CAFP. CAFP’s All Member Advocacy Meeting is the largest advocacy event in all of California, and the AAFP is conducted in Sacramento. The AMAM serves as a platform for policy and political experts to express their opinion.

Dr. Patri is a recipient of the “Top 40 physicians Under 40” award by the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 2019. Dr. Patri’s is highly acclaimed in the Family Medicine community for her unique expertise and great leadership. She has been endorsed by a multitude of leading physicians in the Central Valley for the distinctive nature of her work as well as her contribution to patient care and the community, including Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education.

Due to her accomplishments, she was recently recognized in “40 under 40” by Business Street Online in Fresno. The “40 Under 40” is presented by Business Street Online and recognizes outstanding business professionals in the private and public sectors of central California who have yet to reach the age of 40. They have demonstrated a strong work ethic and are the leaders of today as well as tomorrow.

“I feel honored with this recognition and am thankful to my family, friends, colleagues, and patients who trusted my abilities,” says Dr. Patri. “I probably came here to serve patients and teach future doctors, but the different opportunities that were offered to me through my workplace, through the CAFP, through the clinical practice, through the opportunities for teaching, and even in the Central Valley Community, it’s just very fulfilling and great opportunity for growth”.
