Science Prep Academy’s paid internship program prepares students with autism for the workforce

Phoenix, AZ – June 28, 2021 – Science Prep Academy, a leading Phoenix-based career prep school for neurodiverse students, is partnering with The Salvation Army Kroc Center to provide paid internships for students with autism between June 14-July 9. The Phoenix Youth R.I.S.E. Summer Employment Program offers an opportunity for youth (aged 16-18 years old) to gain valuable paid work experience.

The City of Phoenix Youth R.I.S.E Summer Employment Program aims to bridge the gap between students looking for summer jobs and employers looking for summer interns. The program is designed to provide hands-on experience in a business setting. R.I.S.E interns will attend a required 2-day work readiness training and work 80 hours during a monthlong internship.

Science Prep Academy, a program of the Neurodiversity Education Research Center, is partnering with the Kroc Center as a part of its strategy to support Neurodiverse students and young adults transitioning into the STEM workforce. Science Prep’s participating students will perform their internships at the Kroc Center after receiving their work-readiness training. Along with this training, Science Prep will implement a Positive Skills Support approach to ensure their success, which includes social-emotional support and helping them build any challenging skills needed for their internship assignments.

Kenneth Mims, Founder and Superintendent of Science Prep Academy, says the high rate of unemployment among youth with autism and their difficulty in finding satisfying employment are the motivating factors behind this partnership. “A whopping 85% of college grads affected by autism are unemployed, compared to the national unemployment rate of 4.5%. That’s alarming — unemployment deprives them of a life of dignity and respect, and they certainly deserve better.”
