Quality Mental Health Counseling in America

How EMDR Therapy is Transforming Clients Experience in Counseling.

There is a serious problem in America. Quality mental health is becoming harder to find. From for profit universities, less focused on quality education and more on pushing students through graduation; To students not being thoroughly vetted to ensure they are appropriate candidates and educated enough to care for others, communities across this nation are being affected by poorly trained and underqualified mental health practitioners. And people are paying the price.

Imagine spending months or even years in therapy, going over the same situations with no end in sight. The client hires a therapist and week after week, counseling continues in hopes that the therapist identifies the problem and how to fix it. But here is the issue. The therapist doesn’t have the answers either.

But session time ends, the next appointment is scheduled and rinse and repeat, over and over again.

Sadly, this happens in counseling offices across America every day.

But there is hope! EMDR Therapy has revolutionized the way in which mental health services are provided. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based approach with dozens of controlled studies and countless research supporting its effectiveness at getting people better, fast!

EMDR fast forwards client’s ability to heal and make sense of their situations by bringing awareness to the past (which holds important information about learned behaviors), the present (what has the client seeking help now) and the future (to make sure these situations don’t come back up again).

Imagine a 5 year old in an elevator with mom and dad. The elevator gets stuck. Dad panics and attempts to ‘rescue’ the family by trying to pry the elevator doors open. Mom panics and starts yelling and crying. Firefighters arrive and things finally return to normal.

30 years later, the now 35 year old can’t understand why driving on the highway is suddenly a problem. Or why the tensions of going to work are overwhelming.

The connection here is that a 5 year old experienced a traumatic event that the brain could not possibly make sense out of. Even though the child was safe in the elevator, the environment was not something that a 5 year old would understand.

Now, the 35 year old is struggling with feelings of not being in control at work or not safe while driving. The same feelings that were experienced when stuck in that elevator. Traditional forms of therapy would take months or years to make this connection.

EMDR uses techniques to stimulate activity in the brain (where the memory is stored) to bring up the memory on its own and reprocess it once and for all. Once this memory is reprocessed (sometimes in just 1 session), the client experiences that driving on the highway is safe again and that there is control at work even if the control is in the form of finding another job.

Eventually, the reason for therapy is resolved without months or years in therapy. This is therapy that works!
